Eczema
Eczema, also known as Dermatitis, is a chronic skin disorder that is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction in the skin (similar to an allergic reaction). This causes long-term inflammation that makes skin red, swollen, and itchy and some types of eczema will blister, weep or peel. This condition can be complicated by bacterial infections of the skin.
Eczema is most common in infants and may run in families with history of asthma and/or hay fever. It is not contagious but can not be cured and the symptoms may subside and return in “flare-ups”. It is best to avoid irritants in order to reduce flare-ups, but these may be controlled or soothed by medicated topical ointments.
